Summer go Green

Changemaker: Kemo Fatty

Country of Implementation: The Gambia

Over the last few years, the forest cover and number of trees in The Gambia has significantly reduced. This has resulted in loss of biodiversity and severe land degradation due to soil erosion and loss of fertility. Our areas which used to be very fertile are now barren and the overall agricultural productivity has declined dramatically which is pushing people deeper into poverty. Moreover, pressure on the remaining forests and trees is high as the proportion of people depending up on them is quite high. Cognizant of this threatening problem, Kemo and his team of environmentalist decided to make tree planting attractive by making it a campaign of ACTION & AWARENESS Green-Up Tree Planting Initiative is established to contribute meaningfully in addressing some of these challenges. it was officially launched by the Executive Director of the National Youth Council on the 16th September, 2016, in commemoration of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The project vision is to create an environmentally friendly, ecologically stable, and economically flourishing Gambia for the benefit of the people. The project will cover various areas like schools, religious places, local communities, rural and urban settlements within a period of 10 months from the date of commencement of the project.
