Maria is the co-founder and CEO of Pretty Purposeful, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and funds for obstetric fistula repair surgeries. To date, her organization has raised enough for over 100 repair surgeries in Kenya, Malawi, and Sierra Leone as well as funding the refurbishment of a clinic that serves over 300 women per year. Along with her sister, she has led global awareness campaigns surrounding fistula that have reached an estimated 250,000 people. She has spoken around the world, including at the UN, on maternal health and the importance of youth activism.
