Many immigrant and low-income families in South Bend struggle to access healthy food due to financial poverty, time poverty, and limited space. Traditional food security solutions, such as expanding grocery access or public transportation, do not equip individuals with the skills or confidence to produce their own food.
Planet Plate’s solution is a 6-week “How to Start a Garden” program. This program equips 20 families with the tools, seeds, and knowledge to build low-cost, space-efficient, micro-gardens in their homes. By teaching practical, culturally relevant, and budget-friendly gardening strategies, participants will be able to grow fresh produce year-round—even in apartments or shared housing.
