Changemaker: Micaela Sandra Alberto Banze

Country of implementation: Mozambique

In Marracuene district, hundreds of children attend school without basic furniture such as desks and chairs, which limits their comfort, dignity, and ability to learn. To tackle this, Micaela Banze, lawyer and youth advocate, launched Bases para Aprender, a project providing essential classroom furniture alongside mentorship sessions to inspire students to pursue education and future opportunities.

Running from September to November 2025, the project will deliver desks and chairs to under-resourced schools and offer workshops on scholarships, career planning, and leadership for students aged 8–17. Implemented in partnership with local schools, district education officials, and volunteer mentors, activities include needs assessments, furniture distribution, mentorship, a community engagement event, and impact evaluation.

By improving learning conditions and providing guidance, Bases para Aprender empowers Mozambican children to learn with dignity and dream bigger. Two pilot schools in Marracuene have been identified, with local carpentry cooperatives involved to ensure sustainable furniture production.
