Global Youth Summit 2010
Are you between 16 and 19 years old? Are you a social entrepreneur, community activist or volunteer? Do you want to bring about positive change?
Do you want to become a Global Changemaker?
If your answer to these questions is "Yes", read no further. Starting today, we are accepting applications for the Fifth Annual Global Youth Summit of the Global Changemakers programme (21-27 November 2010). Once again we'll be bringing 60 young people with a passion for change together in the UK, providing them with training, ideas and a whole new network of likeminded people.
Attendants of previous Global Youth Summits have attended high-level events such as the World Climate Conference, the Clinton Global Initiative University and World Economic Forum events in Davos, Cartagena and other places around the world.
For details on how to apply, you need to be a registered user and signed in on the website. Registered, signed in users will find all relevant information about the application process here.
If you aren't registered yet, you can do so here; once you're registered you will be sent an activation mail, so make sure to check your e-mail inbox. Once you're registered and your account has been activated, you can sign in here.

@claudia_whf: We’ll open the call for applications for the peer facilitator positions this week on Friday. However, it’s unlikely we’d already pick someone from the LAYS group, as ideally we also want to see what sort of work the new Changemakers do in the months after they return from the summit.
@Kashfi28: There will be more regional summits where we’ll be looking for applicants aged 18-24.

@Ajay: it might be an idea to spend the next 6-12 months joining an organisation and doing work in your community. This will provide you with experience and make a positive change.

@sramas: We only confirm having received complete applications. Once you’ve submitted your video and your online form, you should get a confirmation mail within one working day. (Allow for short delays over the weekend.)

I wanted to double check that applicants for the Global Youth Summit must have not previously been involved in GCM events ??
If Yes ,
then when will the BC host any events for GCM’s who have been previously involved in One of the Summits ? because we recently started up our CAPS & now we have a fully devaloped GCM team Egypt in operation !
Its was a great experience in Africa when it was just brainstorming but I’m sure that more chances of exchange will be even more valuable that now were not only GCM’s by name but we have whats worth to share & discuss !

@abouhuss: Exactly - the summits are primarily for new Changemakers.
In terms of opportunities for existing Changemakers, there are these: you can apply for the positions as peer facilitators and you have a chance of attending a high-level event. However, we don’t currently have a summit planned exclusively for existing Changemakers.

I am working with youth projects and specializing in Youth Exchanges through Arts. I have an experience of organising a youth exchange between a group from Macclesfield, U.K. and Tamilnadu, India. I am was an active member of an Indian Youth Movement and Volunteering Youth Programmes in different Social Organisations in south India. 1) - Log in your account
2) -Go to http://www.youtube.com/user/globalyouth2010.
3) - On the left-hand side, under the video at the top, you should find this box “Add as Friend”. Click on it and the administration of GC will accept your request as soon as possible.

@ Tijana. The age limit for the Global Youth Summit, the event for which applications are being taken, is 16-19. The age limit for the wider group (of which this event is only a subset) is to 25.
So basically, for this conference you have to be 16-19 to qualify.

I too had a question about that. Some of the questions in the written application overlap ( at least implicitly) with the video questions. I’ve not reiterated what I’ve already said in the application but added on to what was already in the application. Will the video be evaluated in conjunction with the video or independently?

@myedus: SurveyMonkey should give you 8 lines of 100 characters to answer those questions. You can write quite a lot, but usually 2-3 paragraphs to the point are more effective than pages and pages of text.

It’s by Joao, a Portugese Changemaker who ended up going to the GYS 2009 and then the WEF Annual Meeting at Davos. This should give you an idea of what your video could look like - although there are other ways the same questions could be addressed.

@Izzie: The summit will take place in the UK, in High Wycombe.
@leang007: I’m afraid the age range is fixed. However, there are also regional summits, and these are open to participants aged 18-24.

As the home page of Global Changemakers shows that it is for people aged from 16 to 24, so i still wonder that the global youth summit is only available for young people aged 16-18, or there’s another program for people aged 18-24?

@starsky: You can get involved as a member of the community, which you may already have done by registering. This allows you to access members-only areas such as the online tools (under CAPs) and the message boards, where you can interact with Changemakers and like-minded people.
Other than that, you need to take part in a summit (regional or global) to become a Global Changemaker, which allows you to participate more closely.

@Sothy: At all the regional summits, there’s a global contingent - the majority of participants will be from the region, but a number of slots are set aside for participants from the rest of the world, as long as they can demonstrate a link to the region in question.
@Dexter: If your video’s that long, try to make sure that you can make it shorter, either by editing it or by re-recording it.

@Thien Pham: We don’t expect everyone to have perfect English, but obviously people who are more comfortable at communicating in English tend to have a better chance. (Being comfortable with the language is quite different from not making any mistakes, by the way - I’ve met a lot of impressive people who may make mistakes speaking English but who are more convincing communicators than many native speakers.)
@renaissance: If you have a strong reason why you can’t submit a video, send me a mail (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) and we’ll look into it. Unless there’s a clear agreement on our part with any individual applicant that they don’t need to submit a video (and you need to have very good reasons), we won’t consider you with an incomplete application.
@shahnozam: Just send me the correct number (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)).
@Tijana91: I would strongly suggest that you submit a new video. Look at it like that - if you weren’t selected last year, it’s probably because your application wasn’t as strong as others. Also, we’d expect that you gained some experience since last year, which should also be reflected in the video.
@spacegirl: If you follow the instructions on this page and go to the application page, there’s YouTube instructions available on that page. (Note that you need to be registered and logged in to access the application page, otherwise you get an “Oops… Page not found” error.)

@Phoenix: I’m afraid we’re strict with the age restriction - although I understand that this is pretty bad luck in your case, as your birthday is just before the summit. We have so many applications, once we’d start making exceptions we’d just have to disappoint more people.
However, we also have regional summits, and for those the age range is 18-24. Keep your eyes on the website during the next 1-2 months for details on upcoming regional summits!

I am just disappointed… Global Youth Summit is expected to be an extremely interesting event for all Changemakers!

@jenny001: The deadline for the videos is 6 August. I’d very much suggest trying to upload them before then, though; if you upload your video on Friday and it doesn’t work for technical reasons, we won’t be able to extend the deadline for you.

Hi, i’ve just learned this application, and I am desperately eager to take part in it, but now i have some questions.
1. Is it possible for all applicants to watch the application videos that has submitted by others?if yes, where can i find them?or the videos are only available for the judges?
2. Does the questions required on the video need to be answered one after another? Can it be a whole speech, including all of them, but not specifying which part is the answer of which question?

@ekaterina45: I believe my colleague Zahid has accepted all current friends requests, so you should now be able to share your video with us.
@Sophie Yen: I’m afraid that most of the videos are private - it’s part of the British Council’s privacy policy. However, there’s a link to an application video from last year earlier in this thread.
As far as the video’s concerned, it can easily be a speech addressing all the questions. You don’t have to do them one by one.
Concerning the programme for November: it’s basically a week of training and facilitation. We help the group become better social entrepreneurs or community activists by getting them to share experiences and best practices, and we do workshops on issues such as project management.

@zainish7: Six seconds longer is just about acceptable, although if we watch your video and feel that it could’ve made shorter without losing any of the content, this will go into the evaluation.

Dear Matt,
I am not saying this to hurt anyones chances but as a change maker I believe we have to be able to speak up for what we believe in.
As someone who edited his video a dozen times to be within the 2 minute time limit I feel having set a limit ( and instructions clearly stipulating that an extra second added by youtube would be the only acceptable exception) the BC should have followed the time it set to provide an even playing field.
The world needs a lot of creativity to solve its problems and getting our message across in 2 I felt was the BCs way to see how creatively. Im sorry to see that this wasn’t the case.
I hope you appreciate my disappointment in light of the effort I put to do my best within the rules provided.

All applications received by noon on 7 August will be considered; however, due to the high number of applications and mails, we cannot give individual replies to people asking whether we received their application. We will notify all applicants (provided the e-mail address we have is correct) by the first week of September, whether they were selected or not.
