Changemaker: Zamakhuba Mpungose

Country of implementation: Eswatini

The present threat to food systems by climate change continues to exacerbate the difficulty of accessing food for the majority of the population in Eswatini. A rise in the frequency of droughts , hail storms , wild fires and other climate disasters threatens food production and has led to the increase of food prices. Urban households are heavily dependant on rural food production to fill up supermarkets. When that food chain experiences a decline in production and increase in prices ,poor urban households suffer the most. The Unami Project equips and empowers poor urban households in the city of Manzini with climate resilient agriculture skills that they adopt into their own backyard gardens to increase their access to food and decrease their food income spend thus allowing them to deviate those funds to other urgent needs. We also hold community climate education workshops thus contributing to a more sustainable city of Manzini. The youth of Manzini being our main beneficiaries are assisted in turning their newly developed farming skills into sustainable agricultural enterprises thus building a better tomorrow, today!
