Changemaker: Akobo Praise

Country of implementation: Nigeria

In Waru IDP Camp in Abuja, Nigeria, displaced families face poor sanitation, limited health education, and high exposure to preventable diseases such as trachoma and river blindness. These conditions not only threaten health but also disrupt children’s education and women’s dignity in managing menstrual health.

Project HealthAID is a youth-led initiative using the AID model: Awareness, Intervention, Detection. From October 2025 to February 2026, the project will directly engage 200 children and 50 mothers through health education in local languages, covering hygiene, disease prevention, and menstrual and sexual reproductive health. Women will also be trained to make reusable sanitary pads using local resources which they can replicate, while receiving samples to improve menstrual hygiene.

Children will receive medical interventions including screenings, preventive medicines, and, for five critical cases, sight-saving surgeries provided by ophthalmologists.

To ensure sustainability, community health workers will be educated and trained to continue awareness, early detection, and referrals after the project ends.

Through the provision of education, health services, and empowerment, Project HealthAID helps Waru families build resilience and healthier futures.
