Changemaker: Margaret Aoko

Country of implementation: Kenya

In Kibra, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlement, fire outbreaks have become alarmingly frequent, leaving behind a trail of destruction: homes reduced to ashes, families displaced, and lives tragically lost. The narrow pathways, limited access for emergency response, and low public awareness make these communities especially vulnerable.

To address this urgent challenge, Empact Strides launched a community-centered education program focused on fire management and first aid training. Through interactive workshops and practical demonstrations, residents, especially youth and women are equipped with life-saving skills to prevent, respond to, and recover from fire incidents.

This initiative goes beyond safety: it builds resilience, fosters collective responsibility, and empowers families to safeguard their health and wellbeing. By integrating education with emergency preparedness, the program contributes to safer living environments and aligns with our commitment to advancing community-driven solutions in education and health.
