Youth Asia-Europe Meeting – Model ASEM 2009 in Le Havre

Model ASEM is a simulation of the Asia-Europe meeting which aims to promote intercultural dialogue as well as to enhance understanding and cooperation between Europe and Asia.

The Asia-Europe Meeting is an informal process of dialogue and co-operation gathering representatives of the European Commission, members of the 27 EU countries, 16 Asian countries, including all ASEAN members, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat.

During this five day event, participants will not only take on the role of a country’s official representative but they will also gather in workshops where they will exchange how the problems on the agenda affect themselves in their different countries and discuss possibilities how to mitigate them.

Most importantly, participants will get the opportunity during the five days to benefit from the diversity of backgrounds and cultures from both Asia and Europe which will be represented at this summit. They will also enjoy intellectually stimulating speakers and explore the cultural heritage of France.

The Model ASEM conference will be held over five days from the 10th  to the 14th November in the French city of Le Havre. This port is dubbed “Porte Océane”, or Door to the Ocean. Le Havre is adjacent to the English Channel and one of the largest ports in Europe, where some of the very first Europe-Asian trades have taken place. The city was entirely destroyed during the Second World War and was reconstructed in the modernist style of Auguste Perret. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
