The WEF Countdown: Q&A with Mousa (9)
What was your first reaction when you found out you’d been chosen to go to Davos?
Well, I was in a conversation with Carmina, and Scott came up and said congratulations. I was stunned, then said “Wooohoooooooo!, then said “Jump for me, Scott, I can’t jump and I feel like jumping.”
What are your hopes for Davos?
I hope I will represent well for the GCM network and for Iraq. It is an honor to be selected but it is also a responsibility to shine throughout it and reflect the rays of light that I saw at the GYS.
What are your fears for Davos?
I fear the cold weather will freeze me to an ice cube… No, I think it is an intimidating presence by the people in Davos, but I also think for our age we are leaders as well and there is no reason not to feel like we are going to own.
In which area would you want to see more youth engagement?
All aspects of youth engagement are urgent and necessary, but I think we need more gender equality and basic awareness against sexual discrimination. Not because I work on it – on the contrary, it is because most people don’t, and we all want to be equal and equally loved, and there is no reason why others should feel inferior.
How can you make this happen?
Well, I think I can work with GCMs from the GYS and previous youth summits from my country. Even though my main work throughout this year and 2 months into next year will be concerned with human rights, I still would want to see some level of equality achieved with the help of fellow GCMs by 2011.
What will the world look like in 2050?
Hopefully it will still be there, as efforts on climate change work. What I would like to see: all businesses are full of social entrepreneurs and involve social responsibility.
If you become the new UN General Secretary, what would be the first thing you’d do?
Go to Davos – and then change the way in which the system works, to support local NGOs and to have the branches act more efficiently and change the UN to become less political and more responsible.
What quality do you like most about yourself?
Mostly its the fact that I can survive through several events and still manage to live normally.
If you could invite three historical figures for dinner, who would they be, and why?
Hmm… I love history so this might be a tough one.
- Asoka: He was a king that had all the power and greatness of the Guptas, yet chose to leave war and conquest and write up a peace contract.
- Constantine: The leader of one of the greatest forces in history. This man is responsible for one of the most thriving cities of the ancient world.
- Buddha: This man is the ultimate inspiration. Leaving his palace and creating harmony through his teachings, he is an incredible person that manifested magnificence.
If you bump into Bono or Queen Rania in the elevator, what do you say?
“Hello, I am Mousa from Iraq and I am a Global Changemaker. my project is supplying a school for visually impaired students with tools required to cope with their life and education in Iraq. These students go through great lengths to get their education and it is my responsibility to provide them with it, because as a person with a disability myself I know the problems they face especially in Iraq. In a war zone they represent the glorious struggle we all seek.”
