London Summit 2009: Leticia’s thoughts
Dear businessmen and government:
I am very worried about the workers’ world situation. I have seen at my country how businessmen are firing people and how families are disintegrating because of their financial situation. It Is very difficult for professionals and working class to lose the jobs in which they have been working almost all their life. I agree money is not the source of happiness, but it definitely helps to improve human situation. How can you ask a starving boy to smile? If he doesn’t even know how he will deal another day.
It is true hard times are coming, so everyone, including powerful and rich people should start practicing frugality; at least until the world economic situation improves. The problem is that most of the businessmen are trying to collect the same gross profit they used to, and they can only do it by reducing costs as much as possible, and one effective and easy way of accomplishing that is systematically firing people. They are basing their decisions in money and speculations, but the most important thing is the fact they are not thinking about the employees. It is also kind of contradictory because if most of the citizens are unemployed and with no money then: Who is going to consume the goods and services industries offer?
Both businessmen and government need to protect the working class so they will consume and consequently reactivate global economy. I’m glad and I hopeful that in the end London Summit offers the most effective way of managing this crisis.
Sincerely,
Irma Leticia Oceguera Ochoa
