Euro-Africa Youth Summit: the call for applications is over!
At midnight on Sunday 19 February the call for applications for our upcoming Euro-Africa Youth Summit ended. A big thank you to everyone who’s applied!
We’ve received 1509 applications from around the world, especially from Africa. The Top 10 countries in terms of how many applications have come in are:
- Nigeria (8.9%)
- Kenya (8.3%)
- Turkey (7.3%)
- South Africa (4.9%)
- Zimbabwe (4.6%)
- Uganda (3.5%)
- Cameroon (3.2%)
- Tanzania (3.2%)
- Sudan (3.1%)
- England (3.0%)
We’ve also had fantastic application numbers for the ten available positions for peer facilitator: 142 Changemakers have applied!
What happens next? Well, today is dedicated to application cleanup: I’ve received over 200 mails over the weekend, most of which come from people who have sent in the links to their application videos. Once I’ve processed all of these, I will be sending out a final round notifications. Please do not send in e-mails asking whether we’ve received your application or your video – I will send notifications to that effect within the next 24 hours.
Once this is over, the exciting part will begin for us: the Global Changemakers team will begin evaluating the applications that have come in. Over the next weeks the members of the central programme team in Switzerland will be working with local British Council offices and Changemaker alumni to go through all the applications and score them. It’s always great to get to know so many new faces and see the passion that young people have for making a positive change… but it’s also sad, because only one out of 25 candidates will make it to the Brussels summit. We would ask everyone’s patience for this next phase of the selection process – all applicants should receive an e-mail notification by 20 March, saying whether they were selected or not.

I wish myself and the rest of you all the best! ..
Well, 1509 youth with a passion to change the world. Indeed, it is very overwhelming to see such enthusiasm especially from young people. My country Zambia didn’t make it to the TOP 10… I have a lot of work to change youth’s perception towards the internet.
Most youth are so skeptical that they think that everything to do with the internet is fraud/419 that’s why they don’t take up such opportunities.
I believe that I will be able to change this mindset now that I have been appointed as the new Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) National Focal Point (NFP) for Zambia. http://www.gyca.org
