Model ASEM was a simulation of the Asia-Europe meeting which aimed to promote intercultural dialogue as well as to enhance understanding and cooperation between Europe and Asia and which successfully took place on 10 to 14 November 2009.
This Asia-Europe Meeting was an informal process of dialogue and co-operation bringing together representatives of the European Commission, members of the 27 EU countries, 16 Asian countries, including all ASEAN members, as well as the ASEAN Secretariat.
During this five day event, participants did not only take on the role of a country’s official representative but they also gathered in workshops where they exchangeed how the problems on the agenda affect themselves in their different countries and discussed possibilities on how to mitigate them. Dr. Werner Langen, the Chairman of the ASEAN Delegation of the European Parliament, took over the patronage for this event.
Most importantly, participants got the opportunity during the five days to benefit from the diversity of backgrounds and cultures from both, Asia and Europe, which were represented at this summit. They also enjoyed intellectually stimulating speakers and explored the cultural heritage of France.
The Model ASEM conference was held over five days from the 10 to the 14 November 2009 in the French city of Le Havre. This port is dubbed “Porte Océane”, or Door to the Ocean. Le Havre is adjacent to the English Channel and one of the largest ports in Europe, where some of the very first Europe-Asian trades have taken place.
