It is unfortunate that only few organisations target youth to equip them with the necessary tools to protect themselves from cancer. South Africa has the highest rates of skin cancer in Africa and is second to Australia in the world skin cancer rates. HACA aims to establish HACA clubs in several high schools in South Africa to improve the knowledge and level of sensitivity about cancer.
Summed up, HACA wants to:
• Develop a HACA-kit, an 8 week step-by-step process to establish HACA clubs in schools. Contents include: meeting plans, articles, flash cards, video clips, case studies, personal stories, etc. Thereafter, the clubs will be ready to design their own meetings and continue spreading cancer awareness amongst peers and within communities.
• Procure UV-sensitive arm bands that signal UV exposure via colour change and campaign their usage amongst the youth as part of simple health habits HACA intends to promote.
