Go Green Myanmar

Cyclone Nargis caused the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Myanmar. The cyclone crossed the country on May 2, 2008, causing catastrophic destruction and at least 146,000 fatalities with thousands of people missing. Cyclones are allegedly a direct result of the climate change. Since cyclone Nargis, farmers have faced serious difficulties rebuilding their economy. Only by planting economically profitable trees like mango or PAIN NAE trees, can some of the villagers’ difficulties be alleviated.

Go Green Myanmar is a project that reforested areas affected by the cyclone. In ten years from today, these areas will be filled again with trees that are economically profitable and will also provide shade to the affected communities. The situation around Yangon and the delta areas is expected to be more favourable as a direct result of this reforestation of the area.

The team planted around 650 trees in Yangon suburban areas and six villages in the delta regions. They also provided environmental education to the community, orphans and monks.

The Changemaker leading this project participated in the 2009 edition of the Global Humanitarian Forum in Geneva.
