Effects of Climate Change in Paramo
Climate change is a global problem with local consequences. A bridge between decision makers and common people should facilitate action towards solutions.
The aim of the CAP is to document the impact of climate change on Bogotá’s water supply ecosystems. 10 million Bogotanos and 80% of their water needs depend on the Paramo ecosystem. Climate change is having a great impact on this ecosystem and can potentially increase the problem.
The CAP targets communities living in the Paramos as well as people living in Bogota. The inhabitants’ perception of climate change’s impact on their water supply will be used as an input to strengthen communication between government decisions and civil society. This communication will then hopefully lead to solutions.
The objectives of this CAP are to:
- Document and to analyze perceptions about climate change impacts on the Paramo ecosystem which ensures water supply for Bogota.
- Identify studies on the impacts of climate change in the Paramos;
- Identify actors and strategic projects of conservation in the Paramos;
- Characterize the communities living in the Paramos and their role in the conservation or degradation;
- Interview common people in the Paramos and in Bogota as “climate witnesses”;
- Define categories for perceptions;
- Create a photo sequence showing the findings of the research.
- Spread the document and photographs in schools, national media, NGOs and government.
The results of this investigation were presented on the World Climate Conference- 3 in Geneva (31 August- 4 September, 2009).
