The project area is located in Bahir Dar City, the capital city of the Amhara Region in Ethiopia. The name ‘’Bahir Dar’’ in Amharic is anonymous with the word ‘’ Sea coast” in English. This is because the city is established along the close proximity in the southern tip of the lake where the Blue Nile River outflows.
The natural resources and biological diversity of the lake and its watershed have long been utilized by humans. Poor resources management coupled with climate change impacts, increased human populations and urbanizations have caused profound impacts on the physical, chemical and biological components of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Nutrient enrichment, water pollutions, unsound water uses and biodiversity depletion have become the ultimate effects.
Urban residents, local communities and policy makers recognize the immediate benefits provided by the lake and associated wetlands, but they missed to understand the inevitable economic and ecological losses that could be attributed from unsustainable uses of the ecosystem services. This has been exacerbated due to inadequate promotion of climate change awareness raising and environmental education amongst the publics/residents and decision makers.
This project was created to promote Climate change and environmental advocacy, climate change and environmental education and awareness raising, public forums, dialogues and debates on climate change and environmental issues so as to bring behavioural changes to achieve goals related to climate change adaptation, sustainable environmental protection and natural resource management.
